Winter Guard

I was thinking that most of you guys don't actually know what a winter guard is. Because it is my job right now, and I'm bound to be talking about it a lot, I wanted to share with you what it is I'll be doing. It's a lot of fun. Definitely a lot of hard work, but a lot of fun, too. I'm lucky to be working with a great group of kids. There is no drama (yet) and they are all hard workers.

This video that I'm sharing is of a really talented group out of Florida. Their name is Paradigm. They aren't a high school group, rather a community group that uses kids from the area. This was their 2005 show. I LOVE this show. Hope you guys enjoy it, too.

You're right that's a great group.
Few questions, is winter guard like color guard? Color guard does performances with the marching band right?

These high schools that have winter guard do they have cheerleading teams and Dance team too? My high school had cheerleaders that would sometimes do dance performances at the games but we also had a dance team, very much like the color guard a lot faster music and no flags. They would perform at assemblies and halftime of games. They didn't do competitions like this, so I'm just wondering is this the new thing or is this just something that bigger high schools can have?

Wow, sorry for the long comment. :-D

Hi,
I just wrote this long ol' thing about how I love Guard and the Paradigm show on your blog, and everything....

But I lost it. Blogger wigged out on me.

Anyway, the gist of it was these links.

My guard's Myspace site:
http://www.myspace.com/chs_colorguard

Two Guard videos I've made:

1) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=636TZswILrw

2) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puPcEKUGsDc

What is your show? Ours is called "Hold On" done to 'All These Things I've Done' by The Killers.

Good luck with everything! We're having fun with Winterguard in Utah! [www.utahwinterguard.org]

Can't wait for WGI Regionals in Las Vegas! March 3, yay!

Dana - Winterguard is color guard when there isn't a marching band. It essentially starts once marching season is over (hence the "winter" part). The schools that have a winter guard may or may not already have a dance team. I think it depends on the school. My high school didn't have a winter guard (we wanted to start one, but there really weren't the funds for it), and a dance team wasn't started until my senior year. But we had awesome cheerleaders! :) So yeah, it depends on the school.

P and A - Our show is called "This Side" and is done to "This Side" by some group that I can't remember their name. I loved your videos!! And I want to be your My Space "friend", too. hee hee. We're not going to regionals in Vegas this year. We got started just too late and registration is closed. I'm sad. Maybe I'll find a way to make it out there to watch you guys anyway!! Good luck!

Yay! We're myspace friends! :)

Oh, my group (CHS) is not going to compete in Vegas. Actually, Clearfield High School is so unsupportive that we had to join another high school -- so, in all confusion, we're actually Roy High School this year.

The will be one or two groups from Utah though. I know for sure the independant winterguard, Envision (Utah Valley State College) is going ... and Urban Expressions Independant W.G. may be going too...

Even though my groups isn't competing, I'm going to Vegas regionals with my hubby. He's wonderfully supportive. A lot of advisors made the yearly trip. I've always wanted to go watch regionals and he offered to take me this year. (awwww...)

As my daughters would say." This was wicked cool!" or This was freakin' cool!"
Amazing, rally amazing what this group did! Do you have footage of your group from lat year? I've been very curious about it, having heard about the costumes.

In my hs we had "song leader" like cheerleaders except that they would perform with the band during games [both football & basketball]. Then by my Sr year w also had a dance/drill team. No flags, tho.

Winter Guard came up in conversation with dinner company. OK, so they're a band family, too. Had to drag Mary [my friend] and her daughter Melanie up to the computer to see the guard. They were duely impressed. [Melanie is the one who wore your purple flag outfit, is a flute, was a drum majorthis year, and is applying to Ricks for next years.]

That group is really good! It's funny how excited I got watching this even though it has been 11 years since I was in band! I miss it sometimes!
