Anybody know the song "Suppertime"? (Mom and Lura, you don't count. Don't answer). Just curious if you can tell me what it's from. Good song. Great play (musical, whatever... sorry Aiden.).
The actual purpose of this post is to put a huge question out there in blogworld. Please don't think me odd (even though I'm sure you already do), just understand that I'm bored out of my mind with this, and I need to know what other people do. So... here goes.
What is your dinner menu for this week? Or, if you don't make a menu for the week, what is your typical week like for dinner? I want to know it all... main dish, side dishes, desserts, whatever. If you go out for dinner, you don't have to give me all the details of that, but you do need to tell me if you went out or go out frequently so I can take that in account. I want to know what other people typically make for dinner in their own homes for their own families.
I get so bored of what we do for dinner, and I often think that we just aren't typical in how we eat for the most part. Seems like I have friends that make these really great, full-on meals, but I don't. I like easy and quick, and I run out of ideas so easily.
Okay, so you all have your assignment. Now... get crackin'!! I need to know this! (Yes, need. Please indulge the very big, hot, cranky, pregnant lady.)

Tonight we had pn fried pork chops with a lemon mushroom sauce (cream of mushroom and lemmon juice) and steamed green beans. Last saturday we had chicken salad sandwiches (that didn't go over well) I haven't made a menue for the week but i think I am craving a dinner salad with chicken and a BLT or a club sandwich. You know something that doesn't heat up the kitchen. Good luck. Its always hard to break the meal rutt.
tonight - grilled chicken w/ wheat pasta (olive oil, fresh garlic, oregano, basil, parsley and sundried tomatoes), raw broccoli, raw bell peppers
tomorrow - i don't know. probably a bunch of greens sprinkled with white albacore tuna, and another round of raw veggies.
i like raw veggies. leave me alone. hehe
i can't think any further ahead than tomorrow.
pasta pasta and uhhhh more pasta.
usually with alfredo sauce. sometimes broccoli.
oh and if I feel the need for more veggies I eat a can of carrots.
yay, I count! I know that song!
Sunday- Pork chops with mashed potatoes and biscuits
Monday-Sloppy Joes with green beens
Tuesday-Alfredo pasta with corn and corn muffins
Wednesday- Lasagna (I have a great recipe for this that is both easy and fast) with peas and garlic bread
Thursday- Fajita Stirfry (I posted this one on the recipe blog a while back... its really tasty, lots of veggies- but not yucky ones hehe)
Friday- Home Made Pizza
Saturday- Sultry Husband cooks on saturdays, he picks a new and untried recipe every week. Keeps me guessing, and gives me one day that I don't have to do the cooking!
I know that song! (but only well enough to sing it in my head, not enough to tell you it's origin, sorry.)
My suppers are faily basic this week, as I'm trying to make fun lunches to my husband to pack to work.
On Sunday I made the ill-fated macaroni (only this time nothing broke, but I had an EMPTY sour cream container instead of a full one so I had to substitute mayonaisse instead) and that makes enough for three nights. So Monday and Tuesday are macaroni nights.
Tomorrow I'm going to do something with chicken (and probably rice and steamed veggies beside) and then after supper I'm going to bread some breasts (cut into fingers) in potato chips, cook them, and make them into wraps for lunch.
I don't plan very far ahead. I think we'll have an enchilada night sometime this week and I think I'm going to whip up some pizza dough for the weekend. Pizza seems to be the most effective way to get my boys to eat their veggies.
I only do grocery shopping once a week (unless I run out of something that we HAVE to have). So I always plan a weekly menu. It's not split up into days. Just every night when it's time to start dinner I make whatever sounds best on the list. I went shopping today so here is a fresh menu for the week!
~Smothered Chicken with Rice (I put this one on the recipe blog a month or so ago)
~Misty Roast (we named it after the friend that gave us the recipe!) This is our usual Sunday dinner. In a crockpot combine 2 cans cream of mushroom (or one family size can) and 1 packet of Onion Soup mix. Add whatever size beef roast will feed your family. Add baby carrots and halved potatoes. Leave on low all day. This is a REALLY good, really easy recipe! Both of our kids devour it!
~Italian Chicken- put a few thawed chicken breasts in a ziplock bag and then add enough Italian dressing to cover them (I use the kraft fat free Italian dressing. it tastes exactly the same, they just take the oil out of it). Let them marinate all day or for however long. I either grill them or bake them and serve them with egg noodles and corn.
~Chili-- I get two big cans of Bush's Mild Chili beans(in the isle right next to Bush's baked beans). put those in a pot and add 1 small can of tomato sauce and 1 or 2 tsp chili powder. Separately, brown 1 lb hamburger with 1 onion (I slice up the onion very small or my kids get picky about eating it). Add the hamburger mix to the chili mix, heat and serve with whatever you like to eat chili with!
~Spinach Lasagna--Our family REALLY loves this! This recipe makes about 3 dinner's worth (i freeze the other two to use later). So you might want to half it the first time to see if you like it! Make a big pot of macaroni noodles instead of Lasagna noodles (I guess you could use lasagna noodles. I mess up every time I use those noodles so I just use the mac noodles and then the kids have an easier time eating them too). In a big bowl mix 2 24oz containers of low fat cottage cheese, plus 2 16oz bags of frozen spinach (not the blocks, use the bags that you can crumble up. Add it to the cottage cheese frozen. it will cook in the oven), plus 1/2 c. parmesan cheese, plus a handful of mozzarella cheese, and garlic salt to taste (I do everything freehand. just add more of anything until it tastes right!). Then for the sauce I use Classico 4 cheese spaghetti sauce. Layer it just like normal lasagna--sauce, noodles, cottage cheese mix, sauce, etc. Top with mozzarella cheese. Bake at 350^ until the cheese is melted and slightly brown around the edges.
~Home made Pizza with salad or bread sticks.
~Beef Stew-- In a crockpot add stew meat, baby carrots, 1 can condensed beef broth, 1 can water, 1 8oz can tomato sauce, 1/3 c. flour, 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce, 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp sugar, 1/4 tsp pepper. stir it up well and slow cook for a few hours. With a good hour left add a bunch of diced up potatoes and cook on high until they're tender. My kids aren't very fond of this one, but I really like it!
Anyway, I hope these help. I get stuck in food ruts too. Especially in the last couple months of pregnancy. We ate lemon chicken at least 4 nights a week for at least the last month of pregnancy with Jenacy!!! It was the easiest thing to make, just cube up a couple chicken breasts and add lemon pepper spice and bake for half an hour. Then I'd make instant potatoes to go with it :)
Good luck!!! When is the due date?
Another thing that might help is if you get a recipe card and write down the name of every recipe you can think of that you know how to make. I keep that in the front of the recipe box and add to it whenever I make something new that turns out well. Then if you can't think of anything good to make you can look over the whole list and see if anything sounds good.
that last suggestion Feathersky made about keeping a list of recipes I have also done. Mine is broken up into soups/salads, main dishes, and desserts, I have it saved on my computer along with most of my recipes.
I haven't made my grocery list for the week but once I do I'll let you know what it is. I only do my grocery shopping once a week so I make a list of what I want to have for dinners that week and pick and choose what I feel like making that night.
I make a list of different meals that I then choose from every night. The list I made should last me for two weeks depending on quantity of meal and which day I make it that meal could be lunch for hubby the next day or dinner the following night.
Here is the list I came up with yesterday:
-Spinach-Strawberry Salad (I'll have to post this recipe on the recipe exchange blog)
-Hamburgers and Potato Salad
-Stir-fried broccoli & pork
-Chicken Breasts with Orange Glaze and Wild Rice
-Spaghetti, French Bread and Salad
-Frito Chip Taco Salad
-Roast Sticky Chicken & Mashed Potatoes (the Sticky Chicken recipe is already on the recipe exchange blog in the crockpot section)
Happy Cooking.
I'm with goofyJ: I basically know what foods I use to cook with and try to keeo well sti=ocked. Throw in a food storage recipe about once a month [somewthing made with food storage items that we don't neccessarily eat regulary--ie spam dishes] Add at least one "fancy" new dinner every couple months, and we're done. But I still keep the crock pot filled with red sauce much of the sime, so pasta is most always part of any meal--its just what goes with it, or what pasta is used.
Then there's the "hot summer" dishes--Cok at night after the sun goes down and usually eat cild: pasta salads, potato, chicken, tuna, green salads, veg plates with dip, deviled eggs, pickles or pickled stuff. cold baked beans, cold chicken etc. Got to beat te heat--oh, and, of course, ice cream!
NOW Can I sing the song? " Oh, it's Suppertime..."
